Lajoux Edmond Jean was a French painter, illustrator, and uniform designer, renowned for his depictions of military life, cavalry, and war scenes. Born in Charenton-le-Pont on February 26, 1890, he served as a painter for the chasseur regiments and the French army, documenting wartime experiences with precision and artistry.
During World War I, Lajoux was integrated into the 1st Army and witnessed key battles, which deeply influenced his work. His paintings and drawings capture the intensity of war, particularly the landscapes of the trenches and the movements of cavalry. Beyond painting, he was an accomplished illustrator, designing uniforms for the Portuguese and Turkish armies in 1926 and contributing to numerous military books, including Les Cavaliers de la Grande Guerre (1914-1918) and Les “Africains” (1944).
Lajoux’s legacy endures through his striking visual narratives of military history. He passed away in Montpellier on July 10, 1960, at the age of 70.
